Five-Minute Friday {gather}

Joining in for the weekly link-up with Kate Motaung as she gives the word prompt and we write, unedited (sort of), for 5 minutes. We even call it a party so join the fun!

There was a time when my hands moved toward the sewing machine that stood at the ready. A time where I flipped through the pattern books at the fabric store and smoothed the material out after pre-washing.

I made curtains for my first little place and a dress or two to hide the baby bump women thought had to be hidden. (hooray for today’s women!)

Then it was wall hangings for our daughters room and clothes for her and none of this sewing was out of need but the need to create. To see the flat piece of fabric take shape and be filled with form and move.

I made long basting stitches, two rows a scant 1/8 ” apart. You do that so you can gather the fabric to give fullness for curtains or a little girls dress.

It’s the first thing I thought of with this word prompt, how gathering tends to invoke pleasant things.

We gather memories from photography and promises from words.

We gather warmth and sweet smells when we gather a newborn up in our arms and when we hod the wrinkled hand we gather a lifetime we don’t want to let go.

It’s a word that represents a coming together, a holding close, a storing of good things that once gathered spills over and all around reminding us of a presence dear.

It’s the promise that where two or three are gathered as believers, Christ is with us. Always.

      Thanks Abbey. I do very little sewing these days. Don’t seem to have the patience for it and find painting less frustrating and more fun 😉 Thanks for stopping by.

    Loved your post. Loved how the word evoked comfort and creation and the need to create…..absolutely loved reading your piece, which has brightened my rather grey and fuzzy morning….thank you! Loved your photo, too: the one with all the bobbins, especially…..makes me want to run and create something! Thank you so much! {A FMF friend}

      Thank you Helen, for your encouraging words. I take much comfort in the creative process. It’s a time for my mind to be unencumbered by the burdens of the day. Now go make something! 😉

    When I saw your photo, I immediately thought of the beauty of gathered curtains. It is such a lovely word – to gather things close, to be gathered in someone’s arms. Love that you made things for your kids! My mom used to sew a lot, and now she’s gotten out her machine again to help us make things for our new home. Love the bits of homemade around!

      I thought I’d sew for the granddaughter but after making a couple of things for her I remembered how frustrating it can be and its not cheap these days. Excuses, excuses! It is a lovely word Annie. I even prefer the expression worship gathering it exudes warmth t me.

We'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
